Learning Golf and Golfing Terms

It requires patience and hard work to be able to learn to play a good game of golf. Study all the rules of the game before you start swinging your club to make the perfect hit. There is a strong tendency among beginners to commit some common mistake when holding the club for the first time, so having a golf lesson from an instructor can help you overcome these beginner tendencies. The instructor will make everything easier of you.

Beginners learning golf tend to lookup when striking the ball. Now this can result to a stroke being counted even if you do not connect with the ball. It is important to always look down until after you have hit the ball. You can achieve this by keeping your hips rotated after the hit. When swinging, extend your arms fully, this really helps create the perfect swing, especially for a beginner learning golf. After a successful hit, count to five before you raise your eyes upwards.

Another common problem for people learning golf is that once on the green, too many putts are missed. Stand in the putting position and keep your eyes focused on the ball. You will likely hit the target this way. Your success rate will increase dramatically when you make this simple change.

Sometimes with novices learning golf, the ball goes into another direction than the one you are targeting. With a little bit of patience this can be remedied easily. Proper stance is essential to perform the perfect stroke. Sometimes this can happen when you hit from the side of the cub. This is one of the biggest things that will throw a ball to one side of the green or another. You end to build your strength and make solid swings to throw the ball into the direction yow want. Hooking is another issue novices learning golf have to lean to handle well. Sometimes the wrong stance can cause this to occur, other times it is the way beginners hit the ball that causes hooking to be a problem. Do not grip the club too strongly as this can be another (often) overlooked problem. Keep on practicing and you will soon make the improvement you wish.

Some Golf Terminology

It is nearly impossible for a newbie or somebody who does not even know anything about golf to truly realise the wide selection of expressions involved in the game. Some of the most commonly used expressions are listed under so that you know what means what. Of course, this list is not absolute, but this list will help you get started successfully.

Back Nine – this refers to the last available holes on the golf course with the set of 9 and the sequence to which the course is played in determines this set. To start with, when planning to start off on hole 1, the holes 10-18 are what the back nine would relate to. On the other hand, back nine would mean the holes 1-9 if you start off playing with the 10th hole.

Birdie – This is when a score for a certain hole comes in one stroke under par for the particular hole that is being played. Meaning, the score must be a 2 if the hole being played is a par -3 and a score of 4 for the hole of a par -5.

Bogey – a term that means a score is taken when a single point comes in over the par. So a score of 4 would be a bogey when you are playing a par –3 hole. To explain further, a hole at par –5 needs a score of 6 to be called a bogey.

Bunker – this is built by making a depression on the ground and then covering with sand, and this is a hazardous area, which is to be avoided. While typically they are found by the greenside, they can also be present along or beside the fairways.

Green – This is what the very end of a hole is called where the flagstick is situated. This is where you usually putt out the rest of the holes that can have varying shapes but mostly are either oblong or oval in shape.

Handicap – this is the sign of the player's general playing capacity. It is by and large compiled based upon the last several scores that have been played as well as the course rating and the slop ratings that accompany the courses that were played. by and large, someone who has a typical average of 10 over par will have a slightly better handicap. On the subject of handicaps, a player having a 2 is even better to a player with a handicap of 3 or higher.

Hole – This is the exact area where the flagstick resides to mark the exact location of the hole on the green. This word is also used to describe a golf course, for instance, a golf course has 18 holes.

Over par – this term describes a score, which comes over par for the course or for the specific hole. A hole that was a par -4 with a score of 5 can be sited as an instance of an over par. even so, while this can refer to just a specific hole it can also refer to the entire course as a hole as well.

Par – the number of strokes taken to sink the ball relates to this. Very long holes will require higher values. As an example, a hole with a shorter length would only be a par 3 while a par of 5 will be allow from a very long one. The par number is the result of the added value of the particular holes as well as from the whole course which enables the players to determine the scope of the length before the game begins.

Clothes Maketh The Golfer

Many people find the dress code surrounding golf strange but all sports have them. This means that it is very important to ensure that you are selecting the best possible apparel when you are trying to decide what to wear. Each golf course may differ on it's expectations from golfers so it is best to know what these are in advance. Some golf course will actually stop a player from enjoying a round of golf if he is considered inappropriately attired. As most people have made the effort and want to play a round of golf, the last thing they want is the embarrassment of being turned away.

Whilst the golf rules do not expressly state what is exceptable and what is not, most golf clubs will look at their dress codes as being sensible, and fitting in with the general etiquette rules of golf.

For men and boys there are several things that are immediately unacceptable on the golf course. Collarless or sleeveless shirts are below par on the golf course. Other faux pas can include running or jogging pants, and shoes with metal spikes. Avoid wearing clothes with repulsive logos or obscene messages on them. In addition, jeans as well as sandals are generally not permitted either (this applies to women too).

The most apt clothes for men are, suitable pants or shorts, golf or sports shoes and collared shirts. Your shoes ought to have soft spikes and metal spikes are not allowed in many golf courses, as they tend to damage the turf. (Note: Having the correct golf shoes will help to improve your game.) When wearing a shirt, both long and short sleeved are permitted and if required a sweater that can be of the pullover variety or a turtle neck. Trainer socks cannot be worn, they must be of normal length and not contain garish logos so plain is better.

Women should have less of a problem as shorts and fitted skirts are accepted without many restrictions. Generally, women are barred from wearing pants of any type including jeans shorts. For women, the length of the skirt or short is important and they ought to be cautious that these do not go up more than 5 inches above the knee. But then, every golf course has its own rules regarding such matters. Women are also supposed to wear shirts with collars unless they have put on a pullover with a V-style neck design.

Women however, are allowed to wear shirts that do not have a sleeve, if they wish, or one with a short sleeve. Other things which are allowed on the golf course are socks which come up till the ankles, and shoes which should be either golf or athletic. Socks, in solid color, should not carry any logo or design, which is distasteful. When taking along a guest to play alongside you, the same regulations apply, there are no exceptions because they are a guest. As stated above the exact dress code for the golf course where you play may vary, a quick check of their website, or a quick phone call should clear up any questions you have in regards to what is appropriate and what is not if you have any questions.
